I read this book at the doctor's office today and want to recommend it here! The Last Badge, by George McClements. It's about a boy on a quest to earn an elusive badge in a scouting program. It would be a perfect book to give to an Otter or a younger Timberwolf boy.

Nice points about the book:

- the scouting they practice is a family tradition, a nice example of a child and family pursuing scouting independently

- the illustrations and badges are really fun!

- the moral of the story is to do your best, and do the right thing even if it may not lead to the expected outcome

- the scouting program or organization itself is made up (Grizzly Scouts)

Shortcomings:

- not co-ed. The family members who carry on the scouting tradition are all male. This is a great book to give a boy, but it doesn't represent the coed scouting that we practice in BPSA. This isn't a negative really, just important to note that it doesn't include women in the scouting practice. I wish the author had included one word "mother" or "aunt" in one line in the book - one simple word would have opened the door to coed scouting in this family's back-story!

Aside from that shortcoming, it's a great story, and the boy and his father are great examples of a small family pursuing carrying on a scouting tradition with no other scouts or organization around them.

Looks awesome, I just ordered it on Amazon. Thanks for the tip!

Here is the link to it on amazon :)

Thanks! My son needs more books to read this summer. Ordered.

My copy just came in. Great book, really excited to add it to my son's bookshelf.

Crazy good deal, too. Jacket price is $16.99, and it's just $6.80 at Amazon.

Glad you like it! Really fun plot twist at the end :)

I think there needs to be a Moon Frog badge in the BPSA. :)

Along these same lines, I just ordered and read to my little ones (would be great for Otters) "Snoopy and Woodstock's Great Adventure." Of course being a Peanuts book, it has all of the charm and nostalgia one would expect, and the fact that it focuses on a Scouting Adventure (complete with many scouting terms, dry Peanuts humor, AND co-ed!), is icing on the cake. I HIGHLY recommend it. I would like to do a whole mini-program based on the Beagle Scouts. :)

SNOOPY AND WOODSTOCK'S GREAT ADVENTURE

Nice find!

I have been using the following as an introduction to scouting.   But alas all the bears are boys.

Berenstein. The Bear Scouts.  Random House NY.1967.

Oh! Just ordered. Thanks! Also  ordered a 60's Disney Classic I've never heard of: "Follow Me, Boys." Why have I not seen this movie?! Follow Me, Boys!
